English as an additional language or dialect

Head Teacher: Ms Lauren Derrick

English as an additional language/ dialect (EAL/D) faculty

The EAL/D faculty supports students at Fairvale High School whose first language is a language or dialect other than Standard Australian English, who require additional support to assist them to develop English language proficiency. EAL/D students may include:

  • overseas and Australian-born students whose first language is a language other than English
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students whose first language is a language other than English, including traditional languages
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students whose first language is a creole or a variety of Standard Australian English such as Aboriginal English.

At Fairvale High School there are discreet classes, across Years 7 to 12, for students who are still developing their English language proficiency. For students in these classes, the subject of English is taught by a specialist EAL/D teacher. This ensures that EAL/D students receive targeted, curriculum-based English language instruction that meets their particular English language learning needs.

EAL/D teachers also provide additional support to students through team teaching across a range of subjects. Some of the subjects where team teaming may occur include English, history, geography, mathematics, science, and personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE). This means that in some classes, students will have two teachers working together to plan lessons and help students: the subject area teacher and an EAL/D teacher.

To help meet the needs of the diverse range of EAL/D students at Fairvale High School, we also have a Refugee Coordinator and an International Students Coordinator.
